Jeevanlal MP
Sometimes it is not easy even for talented Painters and Sculptors to find appropriate subjects and themes for their work. But for Jeevan Lal, there has never been a dearth of inspiration. The reason: his bespectacled eyes not just see the world before us, but also view the vast expanse of the Three Worlds. Fascinating myths, traditions, celestial beings, gods, demons, animals and timeless stories and values are stretched across
his canvas and chisel.
His unique series of Avatar paintings, murals and sculptures bring alive epic images in a very typical style, a rare combination of tradition and modernity. Though Avatar creations have evolved from the rich artistic traditions of our cultural and spiritual background, in the hands of Jeeval Lal, they have been transformed into contemporary classics, with a depth and visual balance that enlivens them with a rich aura of sophistication, maturity and unspoken spirituality.
The acclaimed Avatar series is but one of the traits of his artistic life. While being a student of painting and sculpture at Cochin School of Art in the 70’s, Jeevan Lal had got opportunity to devote his talents to creating sculptures and murals at India’s premier exhibition ground at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Working with Pavilions & Interiors, he was part of the team that created exhibits for several award winning pavilions like Kerala, Andhra, Punjab, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, the Nehru
pavilion, Italy, and many Industrial concerns. His endeavours in learning the history and traditions of India art during his long stay in Delhi during the 70’s & 80’s and exposure to the best in contemporary art helped him develop his own distinctive style.
With a repertoire of work that portrays the contemporary to the timeless, Jeevan Lal is a silent, solitary force in our creative landscape.
